The paper presents scientific bases of diagnostics for the retail trade management system. Analysis of term "diagnostics" which has been presented in the scientific literature showed that it mainly applies to businesses and their subsystems. At the same time, diagnostic procedures may be adapted to objects at any level, in particular to the management process of retail trade sector. According to author, diagnostics has to identify the most important problems or irregularities in management system functioning. Therefore, it is a tool for system analysis. In accordance to this approach the concept of trade management system diagnostics was developed, which includes diagnostics of all components (subsystems) of the system, chosen on the basis of a cybernetic approach - the control system, the controlled system, the relationship between them and the environment. The author has analyzed own position regarding the purpose, objectives, principles of diagnostics and a series of works: "diagnostics indicators - criteria for diagnostics - problems-symptoms - problems-causes - diagnosis - recommendations". The author proposed and specified interpretation of the criteria for diagnostics, symptoms and causes, as well as of providing information system.
