Geopolitical situation of post-communist Russia

The paper reviews the current foreign policy of the Russian Federation. Some facts of the reduced geopolitical presence of Russia in the world are presented. Scientific viewpoints of Russian researchers of Eurasian and Neo-Eurasian issues, their commitment to the idea of exceptionality of the Russians are demonstrated. Two alternative forecasts by Western researchers of further geopolitical situation and development of Russia are given. It is pointed out that the RF pursues an aggressive foreign policy underpinned by economic, political and military pressures both in Europe and the post-Soviet space. The author compares statistical economic indicators of the USA, the EU and China with those of the present-day Russia, which are convincingly indicative of the losing Russian position in the struggle for global leadership. It is concluded that the RF has neo-imperialist ambitions as to the former Soviet Republics; has lost its international authority as a guarantor of security; makes an aggressive use of natural power resources for exerting pressure on EU countries; is incapable of implementing effective reforms in its economy, society and armed forces; has lost strategic relations with the USA, NATO and EU; has a backward and authoritarian political system, which generally threatens both the world and Russia itself.
